Thirsty
Think
back to the last time you were thirsty. I'm
talking super-duper thirsty. That
thirsty that says I'll drink out of the same cup as a total stranger with those
bumps on their lips thirsty. The only
thing I can think about is getting that cool, refreshing, long lasting relief
drink. I just ate a saltine cracker with
peanut butter and it's sticking on the way down kind of thirsty. The kind of
thirsty that if I don't get a drink, and keep on drinking, then I will not live
kind of thirsty! It's the only thing I can think about thirsty.
Drinkable
liquids are essential for human life.
The number one liquid being; that’s right, you guessed it… Sweet
tea! For us here in the south there is
nothing greater than sweet tea that is made right. You have to add the sweetness to the tea
while it is still hot before cooling it down with ice. Wow!
Makes me want to go to the nearest golden arches drive-thru and say,
“One sweet tea please!”
Okay,
in reality, the most important liquid for life is water. You may be reading this and wondering when the
last time you were thirsty enough to drink a big, ice cold, refreshing glass of
water. Many people go through life
trying to avoid water at all cost. They
will drink anything and everything except water. No
matter how thirsty they are; they refuse to drink water. Even when a paid, professional doctor tells
them to drink water; they don’t. We
often don’t recognize how important water is until we don’t have any
available. A summer drought hits or a
water main breaks causing us to pay a little more attention to our need.
How thirsty are you right now? While reading this article, have you thought
about getting a drink? Are you on the
verge of dehydration every day, but do not even know it? Do you want water, the best liquid known; or
do you want to substitute the best with something less valuable? Of course there are other things that are
good to drink, and good for you too.
However, what is the best? The
best is water! Our thirst is a powerful
indicator of a deep and real need. Hydration
is necessary for sustaining life. Here is what the Bible reads about thirst. Psalm 42:1-2 (NLT) “As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God...”
How thirsty are you? Do you want a drink of the best? More than water, do you thirst for God? God desires a relationship with you! The next time you take a drink of water, or
even sweet tea, ask yourself if you are going after God in a similar manner to
that deer going after the streams of water.
Are you thirsty? Are you filling that thirst with the
best? Are you filling that longing deep
inside of you with the living God?
Nothing else satisfies real, physical thirst like water. Nothing
else will ever satisfy you in this life either, except Jesus.

Jesus
said this about the difference between the water from a well and what he gives to
people who come to Him in John 4:13-14 (NLT), “Anyone
who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will
never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

Faith in Action: What is a Lord?
In a previous blog I stated that “We need a Savior and Lord!” However, what
does it really mean to have a “Lord?” In
the Old Testament we see God’s name (YHWH; Yahweh) given and translated into
English with the use of all capital letters as ‘Lord.’ We often confuse the name of Jesus with this
and think His name is Lord Jesus Christ.
To be very brief and overly simplistic; Jesus is His name, and Lord and
Christ are titles given to Him (though I realize Romans 10:13 is used as a name
in reference to Joel 2:32). Jesus is the
‘Christ’ or the ‘Messiah.’ The Lord is
who Jesus should be to you. So what does
it mean to make Jesus “The Lord” of your life?
Still being very simplistic; the word
“Lord” is translated from the Greek word “kurios.” To make him Lord, then I must make myself his
“slave,” translated from the Greek word “doulos.”
The issue has never been if you are a slave or if you have a lord. The issue is who are you a slave to and who
is your lord? “Don’t you realize that
you become the slave of whatever you
choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which
leads to righteous living [Romans 6:16].”
After you have asked Jesus to be your Savior;
make certain to declare Him the Lord of your life and not just a consultant in
your life. So... have you confessed with your
mouth that Jesus is your Lord? If so,
then “let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that
so easily trips us up [Hebrews 12:1]." If
not, then don’t wait another moment longer.
“Confess with your mouth that Jesus
is Lord…”

Baptist Church)

Deadliest Catch
Have
you ever thought about how many people play in the ocean every year? They go to beaches all over the world to
swim, surf, lie out on the beach, parasail; some even go out on short-term
fishing trips! The goal is for some fun
in the sun; a getaway to be refreshed.
Generally speaking, these kinds of trips to the ocean don’t cost people
too much in the sacrifice department other than a little hard earned
money. They don’t get too far away from
the shore. Occasionally there are minor
inconveniences during their getaway. A storm
comes blowing through, but they quickly pack their belongings and go back
into the safety and security of their room inland. They get sick on that short-term fishing
trip; so they take some medicine and come back to dry land ASAP.

On the
flip side of things, think about Alaskan crab fishermen. There are all kinds of top ten lists of
deadliest jobs in the world, and deep sea fishing/crab fishing seems to be on
every list. There is a TV show called
the Deadliest Catch that chronicles the stories of some of these Alaskan crab
fishermen. These fishermen go to the ocean,
but they have a totally different goal in mind compared to the fun in the sun
people. Their goal is to fish for crab.
Having
a totally different goal brings about a totally different scenario of
inconveniences. They are leaving the
comfort of being able to see the shoreline. They
are not able to go back inland every time a storm hits or someone gets hurt. When ice forms on the ship from the cold
weather and water; they get out in it and knock the ice off with sledge hammers. When there is equipment malfunction; they fix
it. When people on board get injured,
they try their best to keep fishing through the pain and discomfort. They know why they are there and they are
part of the team on board that ship.
They all have the same goal; fish for crab and do not let the team down. There are many sacrifices that come with
being an Alaskan crab fisherman that the fun in the sun people will never see. It is one of the deadliest jobs in the world,
but they do it because their goal is to catch crab.
Did you
know that Jesus called out to some fishermen and said in Mark 1:17, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” Jesus was not calling them for the goal of
feeling comfortable with very little sacrifice.
He was not calling them to run inland every time an inconvenience came
their way. Jesus was not calling them on
just a short-term fishing trip here and there.
Jesus was not calling them to the fun in the sun scenario.
Jesus’
calling is still going out all over the world today. Many people think they have answered this call
because they go to church or they read their Bible from time to time. However, this calling of Jesus is not for the
fun in the sun scenario for our own internal conveniences with the ultimate
goal of self-renewal and self-enjoyment.
Jesus is not concerned with the temperature setting in your sanctuary or
that someone took your seat last Sunday at church. Most of the complaints heard throughout our
traditional church goers today are from the fun in the sun people. They are inconvenienced from personal
preferences.
This
calling of Jesus is to the deadliest catch where we know there are going to be
major obstacles and major inconveniences where personal preferences are thrown
overboard when leaving the shoreline.
However, the goal is very clear; we are fishing for people. This goal cannot be achieved by keeping the
shoreline in view and having a fun in the sun mentality. Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from
your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”

If I am
going to follow Jesus and fish for people, then there are two things I must do.
First, I can no longer be selfish. I cannot push for my preferences and my
desires. Following Jesus is not about
what I want. Second, I must put all my
own preferences, desires, and ways of doing things on the cross of
sacrifice. I must die from the fun in the
sun and follow Jesus away from the comforts and conveniences the shoreline
provides. Jesus is still calling us to
fish for people. The question is, “Are
you following him where ever he is leading you no matter the sacrifices?”

I Will Follow You

Faith in Action: We need a Savior and Lord!

There was a survey stating the most memorized verse in the Bible was “God helps those who help themselves.” Well… That is not in the Bible! As a matter of theology, God’s word tells us the exact opposite. The most quoted and recognizable scripture is John 3:16 (NLT) where it tells us, “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” The Bible tells us that we are in need of a Savior, and that Savior is found in the Good News of Jesus (his life, death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven). Often time’s people say they will go to church or give their lives to God “after” they get everything straightened out. However, that time never seems to come.
One
of the major issues of trying to help ourselves is that we ultimately want to
maintain control of our lives and be the boss.
We will go to church, but when we get things together. We want to go to heaven, but under our own
strength. We want to be the master of
our domain. Control is fleeting, strength is depleting, and being our own master is
defeating. The Bible not only
describes our need of a Savior, but also our need to follow a Lord. The idea is that we are not in control of our
life, no matter how much we try to fool ourselves into thinking that we
are. We need a master that is worthy of
following and powerful enough to transform our lives. Jesus tells the crowd in Luke 9:23 (NLT), “If
any of you wants to be my follower, you
must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow
me.”
The crowd was looking for a
Savior. They were looking for someone to
provide food, miracles, and fun.
However, not everyone in the crowd was looking to give control of their
life to the Lord. They wanted the
benefits, without the commitment. It is
vital for us to see that Jesus is the Savior of the world; to all who ‘believe’
in him. We cannot help ourselves enough to
get in a right relationship with him no matter how hard we try. Romans 10:9-10 reads, “9 If
you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that
God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is
by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by
confessing with your mouth that you are saved.”There is only one true Savior and one true Lord; He is Jesus. Jesus accepts “everyone” who “believes.” He accepts you. He loves you no matter what you have done. He does not save you though, just to let you stay where you are. He wants you to follow him completely. He wants you to rely upon him. There is no other that is worthy of our total commitment. The question is, “Are you in the crowd looking only for a Savior; or are you among those fully committed to following Jesus as Lord.”

I Quit
I
quit! Perpetually problematic people
producing persistent problems... I
quit! Continual complications causing
catastrophic circumstances... I quit! Terribly tenacious troubles tediously
taunting... I quit!
These two words pack a potent punch, but so does the weight of adverse circumstances and problematic people. At some point in all of our lives we have wanted to shout those two words, and many have done that very thing. I quit! Others have not said them, but have followed through on the act nonetheless. I quit!
Most
people ponder on the idea of quitting long before they say the words. Sometimes people quit out of an emotional
upheaval of the soul on the spur of the moment.
Later they live with regret for their passionate pandemonium. You may be reading this and
currently thinking about saying "I quit!" to some thing or someone
right now.
10
things to check before calling it quits and in no particular order:
A couple of Scriptures to ponder:
These two words pack a potent punch, but so does the weight of adverse circumstances and problematic people. At some point in all of our lives we have wanted to shout those two words, and many have done that very thing. I quit! Others have not said them, but have followed through on the act nonetheless. I quit!
It
is stated that some 1700 pastors leave the ministry every month. I quit!
There are some 1.2 million divorces in the U.S. every year. I quit!
There are many leaving the church and walking away from God for a plethora
of excuses. I quit! In 2010, the most recent year that data is
available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has suicide as the
10th leading cause of death for Americans.
That is one suicide every 13.7 minutes.
I quit!
When
the weight of worry is overpowering… I quit! When the calamity of circumstances are
overwhelming… I quit! When the
tiresomeness of tribulation is triumphant… I quit! When the will to produce is squelched by the
impact of the negative from this life… I quit!
Most
people ponder on the idea of quitting long before they say the words. Sometimes people quit out of an emotional
upheaval of the soul on the spur of the moment.
Later they live with regret for their passionate pandemonium. You may be reading this and
currently thinking about saying "I quit!" to some thing or someone
right now.
Sometimes
it is good to say I quit. Maybe you are
thinking about quitting smoking, alcohol, or another bad habit that leads to
negative effects to your health or in your life. Maybe you said yes to an extramarital affair
that you need to quit. You could be
reading this and abusing someone. Then
you need to quit. You may be someone who
is prejudice over someone's skin color or socio-economic background. Then you need to quit. Hopefully we all can see that there are many
things in life that we need to quit!
What
about those that want to quit their calling, quit their job, quit their family,
quit the church, quit God, quit this life, or quit all of the above? You have grown weary from the weight of
people and circumstances constantly pushing you down. You feel all alone and think no one truly
cares. When you know that you should not
quit, but it has just become too overwhelming to not yell those two words out
at the top of your lungs. I quit! Where do you turn? What can you do?
Though
you may be ready to give up. Though you
may have given up in the past. Know that
there is still hope in spite of the most perpetually, preposterous problems
this life can throw your way. There is
still hope. So before you call it
quits. Before you do something that
could cause you much regret. Go through
this check-list and make sure quitting is the right thing to do.
1.
I
have asked a trusted and godly person for help working through this decision.
2.
I
have established proper accountability to ensure I am doing my part correctly.
3.
I
have identified the actual problem and not putting a Band-Aid on the symptom.
4.
I
have implemented a plan to overcome this particular problem.
5.
I
have not allowed a problem in one area of my life to cause problems in other
areas of my life.
6.
I
have given adequate time for the solutions implemented to work the problem out.
7.
I
have been honest with my assessment of the situation and not allowed my
emotions to overwhelm what is the right and best thing to do.
8.
I
have understood that no matter how strong the feeling is, I am not alone.
9.
I
have asked for forgiveness or given forgiveness where I am responsible.
10. I know that Jesus
loves me. He has a plan for my life that I have written down and I am
following Him.
A couple of Scriptures to ponder:
John
16:33 (NLT)
[Jesus said] I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NLT)
16) That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed everyday. 17) For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18) So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Sting
My youngest child went outside with his sister to feed the
animals on our front porch on a June Wednesday evening. We were all getting ready for bed when I
heard him crying. She came in first
saying that he was stung by a bee. As he
came inside crying, he was holding his hand saying that a bee stung him. I asked him how he knew that it was a bee sting. He said, “Uhhh! Daddy, I saw the bee and wanted to pet
it!”
The next morning I woke up and the top of my head was still
a little sore. There was also a newly
formed knot on the back of my neck causing me pain every time I turned my head. My neck continued to hurt for a week. One “sting” caused lasting effects on me and
my life for a week. However, some people
have an allergic reaction to a sting causing much more severe side effects that
must be medically treated. There is even
a great potential for death if not cared for quickly. Wow!
Just from one “sting!”
Chad Hensley (Senior Pastor, Henderson General Baptist Church)
Fast forward about twenty-four hours to Thursday evening
while we are at our girl’s fast-pitch softball game. She is up to bat and I have my camera on the
sports feature taking multiple pictures trying to capture her big hit. As I leaned against the fence to steady the
camera, I zoomed in on her batting. I
opened both eyes to see when the pitcher was going to unleash the ball. In my peripheral vision I saw wasps lurking
overhead and I sensed imminent danger.
As I put the camera down and backed away from the fence, one of the
wasps went on the attack and nailed me on the top-left side of my head. Ouchy!
The experience of the sting hurt worse than hearing about it from my son
the night before.
Did you know there are two other stings that this world
brings our way that are far worse than any sting given by a wasp or a bee? Neither of these kinds of stings is good and
both are very, very dangerous. However,
a cure for these two stings has been provided!
1 Corinthians 15:54-57
Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into
bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is
swallowed up in victory. O death,
where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death,
and the law gives sin its power. 57 But thank God! He gives us
victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Is there a “sting” (sin) in your life that is going
unconfessed to the Lord? Are you living
your life in denial that you have been stung by the sin bee? The Bible says there is victory over that “sting.” Talk with the sting healer and the life giver
today. Ask God for forgiveness. Accept the victory that he gives to you from the
“stings” that are currently causing ill effects in your life today. Imminent danger lurks, but we have victory
through Jesus Christ!

Great Commission & Great Command
“…and God, take anything away from me that is stopping me
from loving you more.” Those words cut
me so deeply when I heard them. I asked,
“Did you really mean what you just prayed?”
I was not talking to a theologian or a scholar or a long time Christian
saint or even to myself. I was talking
to my ten year old daughter after she prayed for our morning family devotion.
The Great Commission can be found in Matthew 28:16-20,
Mark 16:14-18, Luke 24:44-48, and Acts 1:8.
This is God’s plan to let people know about Jesus’ birth, life, death,
resurrection, ascension into heaven, and his eventual return to gather his
people. I want to give you one sentence
that I hope will better sum up all these verses. “Proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to
everyone, everywhere.”
If we are going to love as Jesus told us to, then we
have to also follow his Great Commission.
The word to remember for the Great Commission is “Proclaim.” Proclaim means to announce, declare,
broadcast, and make known. We are all
called by God to “proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to everyone,
everywhere.” The Great Commission is
“Proclaim.”

Often times we complicate things, but in reality they are
very simple; so simple a child can understand.
The terms Great Command and Great Commission are often used throughout
Christian circles, but do we truly understand them and do we rightly follow
them? The simpler the form we can speak
it; the better we can usually understand, remember, and follow it.
The Great Command can be found in Matthew 22:34-40, Mark
12:28-34, and Luke 10:25-28. Jesus
declares that all the laws found in the Old Testament Scriptures, along with all
the demands of the prophets, can be summed up in two commands. “Love God with all your heart, all your soul,
all your strength, and all your mind.
Love your neighbor as yourself.”
These verses and simple summations are the basis for
living out our daily lives here on earth as Christians. They are balanced on the cross of Christ. More importantly, Christ desires that they are
balanced in our lives. The question
still remains, “Can we understand, remember, and follow them?” Maybe we can, but I would like to further
simplify these summation sentences into single words in order to help it remain
balanced in our day to day living.
The word to remember for the Great Command is “Love.” The Bible states that “God is love.” We read that Jesus showed his love for
everyone when he died on a cross for all our sins. Before Jesus died, he commanded that we
love. He was the living and dying example
of love. Now we are to love God and love
those around us. The Great Command is
“Love.”
We are to “Love” and we are to “Proclaim.” To further help us all to understand,
remember, and follow the Great Command and the Great Commission and keep them balanced
in our lives; let’s simply put them together.
“Proclaim Love.” Let us
understand, remember, and follow this; “Proclaim Love.” “…and God, take anything away from me that is
stopping me from loving you more.” Let
me “Proclaim Love.”
